This is a copyright guide for Kenyan writers based on online research and notes from a practical legal education training for creatives facilitated by a legal officer in October 2025. The training was titled, ‘Guide for Discerning Creatives’.
This post covers how Kenyan writers can register their work with the national copyright registry for copyright protection of their original work. Additionally, the post has links to resources to learn more about copyright protection in Kenya, and model contract templates.

Copyright Registration Guide
Open an account with the national copyright registry at https://nrr.copyright.go.ke/
- Have an ID number, open an account, create a password.
- On the dashboard select ‘new application’
- Autofill primary details
- Select copyright category
- Select copyright subcategory
- Upload works (Label document with title of work and name of author. Inside the document a heading should be title of work and name of author)
- Write an abstract (optional) which is a brief summary of the content of your work.
- Autofill author details
- Select 100% ownership if you are sole original author.
- Autofill author details. Select 0% or skip unless you have publisher details.
- Finish with the title of work, and upload the document or file again.
- Complete payment (it’s a perfunctory step, as copyright registration is currently free)
- After completion, you’ll see your pending application on the dashboard.
- Download the copyright certificate and keep it safe.
Contract Templates
A resource for model author / contributor / IP contracts with explanations of standard key clauses (mostly for US and UK but may be applicable as knowledge points for further research to prepare for negotiation, include in your own contracts, or understand future contracts.
